This is Scout . Nature & Cardigan constitution came into play , avoiding a $6000 operation ! As active Cardigan age , like any other athlete , can face injuries . Scout's owner contacted me , very upset as the surgeon insisted on a $6000 back operation . My advice was give Nature a chance . Confinement , rest , & limited activity for several weeks . Gradually Scout improved . Today , due to her owners care , Scout is well .
Many veterinarians , that specialize in surgery , don't believe in giving animals time to heal . Yet the animal needs time to heal after surgery ! About a decade ago , Eli caught his paw under a car tire & twisted it , in an attempt to free . That night I rushed him to an all night vet & had his paw reset . Next day I took Eli to a vet that specialized in athletic injuries . Without examining Eli , he insisted on either a $1000 or $2000 operation that would add hardware & leave Eli with a limp . I balked & asked " Don't these dogs ever heal ? " . I took Eli home & under the care of my regular vet & rest , Eli healed . Eli went on to win his AKC & Canadian championships .
Sometimes vets are right & immediate surgery is needed . Some times Nature & the Cardigan's amazing healing powers need a chance , Scout & Eli are only two Cardigan stories .
So glad Scout is better. It hurts when our dogs are hurting. Hope Scout avoids surgery.
