Halloween On Thanks Giving ?

My dad , born 1913 , would tell me stories about trick or treating on TG . I figured that was with the three wheel wagon , hauling coal , in snow , up hill both ways to school . Then this weekend my 90 year old sister related the tale . Seems they dressed in old clothes & treated for apples !

Halloween traditions like dressing up and trick-or-treating have a direct connection to a Thanksgiving custom called 

Ragamuffin Day, where children dressed in rags to beg for treats. This tradition became popular in the mid-19th century after Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday, but it eventually faded as people began to celebrate Halloween more widely, particularly after World War II.

 Not sure if Sandy knew she would be put to work , she would have been so eager to leave ! With her new home , came a new job . . . therapy / companion . Between Cardigan's nature ( master of passive resistance  ) & new owner's training skills , Sandy has a new job !

 Eli , from my first Cardigan litter , was 9 when he won his Canadian Championship . . . so Abi should have many birthday candles to blow out ! Happy Birthday Abi !

Jimmy Red Corn !

 Grew some in spite of Chipmunks digging up 45 of 50 seeds & neighbors feeding sparrows which ate most of tassels . Corn was prized by moonshiners but went extinct , until rediscovered !

 Worse garden in 20 years ! Cold Spring . All plants stunted ! Only a few tomato sandwiches ! Today picked last of garden , 2 breaker tomatoes . Odd enough , they are from seeds saved from last year's garden . My seeds did better than the seeds purchased from growers online ! Will ripen & save seeds . Planning for next year's garden !

Things I'll Miss !

 With six doctors looking at my health insurance at 77 , I feel fine but can't argue with common sense . Had to cut back to gardening & a couple Cardigans . Here's some things I will miss .

USDA Flashback !

Retired from USDA , where I trained 100 inspectors in 7 states , in export certification , in 2010 . Enjoyed working with inspectors . . .  state & federal supervisors not so much .  Decades of chasing my Cardigans & gardening , I'm buying bagels ! One of my fellow Export Certification Specialists is coming for a visit ! The stories we'll tell ! Almost like war buddies , talking about USDA adventures & retirement surprises ! I can taste the bagels already !

Sad News !

 Beloved Silo has left us to seek Cardigan Heaven . The hardship about getting attached to our furry companions is that they have such short lives . All we can do is enjoy them . Silo was enjoyed .

 " Call me Bond , James Bond ", says Oliver as he skips across Europe disguised as companion dog dressed in his tux ! Here he is staying at Deluxe rooms in Como Italy ! Too hot in Switzerland , so he'll lay low ( as only a Cardigan can ) in Como .

 

September Brings Cool Nights & Mornings To Glenville !

 Too early to fire up heating system & fall clothing . Did see a room heater that appeals to the Caveman in me . Powered by one candle & mass of ceramic pot . Wonder will it work ? Fire hazard ? Not a 3 dog night , maybe a 2 dog night ?

Labor Day Already ?

 Where did Summer go ? Worst garden in 20 years , with cold Spring holding off transplanting till June 1 . Even local farmers didn't have tomatoes for sale beginning August ! One farmer only had 2 tomatoes & gave me one ! Copper looking forward to next year's garden !

Oops !

 Rocky peaked out & was spotted by a visitor . He caught the eye of someone from Delaware . He struck her fancy & has his bags packed for sunny Delaware beaches !

Sandy Becomes An Arizona Gal !

 Today Sandy starts a new adventure , a plane ride to her new home in Arizona !

Out Smarted Again !

 Copper snuck by me & into the Whelping Room , where he woofed down Molly's & Sandy's food ! Wouldn't be so bad , but he just ate his breakfast ! He was so happy with himself !

Stop Thief !

Mornings rotate dogs outside & feeding . When I bought the girls back in , noticed Sandy's feed dish was empty ? She eats fast but not that fast . It pays to watch a lot of Sherlock Holmes ! Never saw Copper , but to eliminate the impossible , it proved Copper would wait till I ran the girls out & sneak into their room to steal Sandy's food ! Will close their gate from now on ! Bad Bad dog !

Start Of A New Era !

 General Election is expanding & hiring ! Maybe I can get back my old job ? It's only 47 years since I quit ( the second time ! ) !

Worse Garden Ever !

Over twenty years of vegetable gardening in Glenville , this was the worst ever ! A cool Spring , with nights dropping into the 40s until June , stunted everything ! Planted 16 tomato plants , to " harvest " only 3 tomatoes ! Went to local farm stand . He only had 2 & gave me one ! Resorted to containers on tables , to avoid 100s of sparrows , mice , & chipmunks attracted by neighbor's feeder . My Cardigans patrolled under the tables after any critter foolish enough to enter garden zone ! One success , 3 Paul Robeson tomatoes . ( success ? ) Flavor out of this world !

End Of An Era ?

For over 25 years raised & shown Cardigan Welsh Corgis . Gathered a room full of ribbons with about 50 litters & almost 300 puppies . A boat load of champions & one grand champion . What makes me proud is taking serious my stewardship of this wonderful breed . Met some really nice people that loved our dogs . Now at 77 my stewardship winds down . Mahouts bond so firmly with their elephants , both retire at same age . My 8 year old Copper & I will share my retirement .
